Recap: Aqua Tech Showcase

The Blue Food Solution: Aquaculture Technology Showcase took place on Thursday, March 9, 2023, where innovative finfish aquaculture technology was introduced to policy and decision makers to the future of aquaculture.

Co-hosted by the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, and Innovation Norway, the Showcase included a seafood reception and an exhibit with 23 displays of various finfish aquaculture technologies.

Aquaculture provides a sustainable source of protein, and provides high paying jobs in rural, coastal, and Indigenous communities in Canada. The technology showcased provided insight into the future of aquaculture in Canada and its continued benefits to Canadians and the economy.


Flash Connect

On Thursday, March 9th in the morning, CAIA hosted a “Flash Connect” with key department officials from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. to provide interested exhibitors with an opportunity to speak to your technology for 5 minutes followed by questions. We heard positive feedback from participants that this was an excellent opportunity to promote finfish innovation, make new connections and help Canada’s finfish aquaculture in making a deeper impression on the great potential of our sector here in Ottawa.

A sincere thank you to the more than 30 representatives from various government departments and organizations who participated including Export Development Canada, Finance Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Health Canada, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, National Research Council Oceans Program, Privy Council Office, Sustainable Development Technology Canada, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, Farm Credit Canada, Ingenium - Canada's Museums of Science and Innovation, and Innovation Norway among others.


Exhibit Displays & Reception

The main event, the exhibit displays and farm-raised seafood reception, took place on the evening of Thursday, March 9, 2023, from 4:30 to 7:30 at the Sir John A. McDonald Building.

Participants were taken on a farm-to-table journey through 23 exhibits including:

A reception menu was creatively prepared by Chef Kenton Leier of the National Arts Centre and featured nine different species of farm-raised seafood from across Canada including Atlantic Salmon, Chinook Salmon, Arctic Char, Halibut, Sablefish, Atlantic & Pacific Oysters, Blue Mussels and Manilla Clams.

We are every thankful for Mr. Andy Fillmore, MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development to say a few words to the reception delegates and hear from Mr. Odd Steinar Åfer Viseth, State Secretary, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries on behalf of Norway.

The event was a success with a packed room of political and bureaucratic guests mingling and learning about aquaculture technology. Overall, more than 200 guests attended the reception including Ministers Joyce Murray, Ahmed Hussen and Ginette Petitspas Taylor. 12 Members of Parliament, 5 Senators as well as Ministerial Staff, Government Department Staff, Political Staffers as well as esteemed members of various First Nations and the Diplomatic Community.
